Everett and Eli go to different schools, so they got the chance to reconnect at the Club. . "My favorite part of being back so far is being back in the gym," said Everett. "I love to play basketball with my group leader and everyone else. It's much better than being at school all day." This specific program is meant to be educational with elements of fun! Our goal is for each child to complete their homework while at the Club with mentors to guide the lesson and a fully equipped technology, which many of our members do not have at home. At the beginning of the school year, our youngest members started working on fluency and writing skills. Leland became interested in the Boys & Girls Club after hearing his friends talk about what they get to do after school. Learning about how much fun he could be having, he begged his mom to sign him up! His mom even heard him reciting the BGC Code he learned from his friends and immediately went to our Clubhouse to get an application for Leland! After just one week at BGC, Leland has already established his favorite things about our afterschool program - which include STEM projects with his friend Caiden. A few days after becoming a Club kid, Leland got the chance to talk to our CEO, El'donte Osborne. He said "the people here are AMAZING! I'm having a great time." This was extended to 3rd-grader D'Rhayven Burns when she told our staff about her upcoming birthday. D'Rhayven was not excited about turning 9 years old because her mother had just started a new job and could not give D'Rhayven the birthday party she had in mind. Of course, the BGC staff took this as an opportunity to show their love for D'Rhayven. Now, serving as the Commercial Portfolio Manager at Origin Bank in Ruston, Rushing believes the Club helped him to be more understanding and relateable to others, which is an "integral part in developing relationships". When asked if college was always the future plans for Rushing, he replied, " of course, my Dad got me a job working at a local Heat & Air Conditioning Company, the summer before college to see if that was more my speed. After that summer, I knew college was where I needed to be - attics are no fun in the middle of July!"
